Original Thriller Demo 1982

In fact, it wasn’t even called Thriller. It’s fun to consider the revision process of something that went on to be an indisputable classic.

Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond

Rare footage of Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond at the 1974 American Music Awards. Apologies for the crappy quality, but you’ll forgive me when you see what happens at the end (one of TV’s best moments):

Donny recently discussed their similarities, telling The Insider:

I think that’s why Michael and I had kind of a kinship, if you will… because we both lived it in a parallel universe. Because we both came from a family of nine children, we were both the same age – I was about eight or nine months older than him – we were both the seventh child of nine children, our mothers’ birthdays are on the same day, and it just goes on and on…

People seem to love the Jackson 5 and totally diss The Osmonds, but sometimes their performances were practically identical and it’s pretty remarkable to compare the two.

“Walking On Your Toes”

It seems like a lot of obits remembering and honoring Michael Jackson have pointed to his 1983 performance of “Billie Jean” at the Motown 25 as an iconic and breakthrough performance because, most notably, he introduced the world to the moonwalk. Slate V put together a fitting tribute to MJ and the moonwalk featuring clips gleaned from YouTube.

UPDATE: Steve Martin’s attempt at moonwalking is particularly noteworthy as well. (via The New Yorker)

Thrill The World

Thrill The World is an annual event where dancers/zombies/awesome people from all over the world perform the dance from Michael Jackson’s Thriller at the exact same time.

On October 25, 2008, 4,179 people in 71 cities [in 10 countries] gathered together to break the world record for the largest simultaneous performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance.

I was in St. Louis; could you spot me? You guys, Thriller is the only song that actually gets better when played 100 times in a row.

This October, find out where zombies are gathering for a Thrill The World in your city. It’s a cool way to honor one of the greatest artists we will ever see in our lifetime and I promise you, it’s one of the best times you’ll ever have.

Michael Jackson is America

From Colin Quinn’s one man show My Two Cents:

He was young and talented and hardworking and enthusiastic and over time success made him move into a house that was too big. He surrounded himself with toys he didn’t need [and became] sexually confused and racially divided. He ended up broke and liquidating all of his assets. Michael Jackson is America.
